The project transforms Codroipo’s fragmented sports district into a coherent and vibrant urban campus. Rather than adding isolated functions, the proposal introduces a spatial framework that reconnects existing facilities, schools and landscape systems into a continuous network of public spaces. The masterplan is structured around a central pedestrian and cycling spine that links the educational cluster in the north with the natural areas and open fields in the south. Along this axis, a sequence of “sports squares” activates the campus throughout the day, ensuring that the district remains alive beyond training hours and competitions.
Area A becomes the main public entrance: a sports plaza integrating an equipped play area, an amphitheatre and a sculptural civic square. This space mediates between football fields and the urban fabric, hosting informal events and seasonal gatherings.
Area B, adjacent to the high school, is reimagined as a community courtyard. Picnic areas, a basketball court, an open-air cinema and a flexible food market transform this plot into an everyday social condenser for students and residents.
Area C hosts the new multipurpose gym. Positioned with sensitivity toward the surrounding landscape, the building acts as both sports facility and cultural venue. Its flexible interior accommodates indoor sports while allowing conversion for performances and public events. The architectural language emphasizes lightness, transparency and environmental integration.
The curved architectural form of the sports complex is inspired by the magnolia — a tree widely present in Northern Italy and deeply rooted in the cultural landscape of the region. In Codroipo, where urban fabric transitions gently into open green areas, the building adopts a soft, petal-like geometry that reflects this dialogue between nature and settlement. The flowing silhouette responds to the climatic conditions of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region: generous roof extensions provide shade during hot summer days, reduce solar gain, and create protected outdoor gathering areas around the building. Like the magnolia petals opening toward the sun while offering shelter, the structure balances openness and protection. The curved form also softens the scale of the sports hall, integrating it harmoniously into the surrounding landscape and nearby educational and sports facilities. Rather than appearing as a rigid, isolated volume, the building becomes an organic civic landmark — recognizable, welcoming, and connected to the identity of Codroipo.
Landscape plays a structural role in the strategy. Tree-lined paths, permeable surfaces, shaded resting areas and ecological buffers strengthen connections with Roggia San Odorico and Durigat Urban Park.
The result is not a single object, but a system: a diffused sports plaza that reinforces community identity, promotes healthy lifestyles and redefines the sports district as Codroipo’s new civic heart.
